Nothing fancy, but my only requirements would be for frequent updates and a page to collect reservation information, such as which days, email, phone #, address, names, etc - it would *not* be an online reservation system. Frontpage is easy and a fast publisher, easy to use with database.

Frontpage cannot create flash, jpeg, png, gif files.. those are all multimedia files created by various other applications.

Since I maintain the web site for my church, I subscribe to a mailing list for church web site keepers in my denomination. Most of their sites make mine look like child's play and apprentice work, but my content has better puns.

Their collective opinion is that Front Page makes horrible, bloated ugly code; every time you scratch your ear it throws in another %26lt;font%26gt; tag, and if you don't watch it carefully it will fix the text size so your visitors cannot adjust it to suit their needs. It throws in "聽" every time you breathe, too.

Most of them like Dream Weaver.

I have Adobe Photoshop, COrel and Macromedia software but the MOST productive software is XARA Webstyle and also try Swish and SwishMAX (for Flash) and is much easier to use than FLASH. XARA is great for QUICK graphics. I am trying to develop a website for Nashville moms. I have no idea where to start. I have already bought the hosting package and domain and everything but I need help with the designing because I don't know how to create login and account setup and stuff like that... www.cafemom.com is an example of what I am going for. For account setup and logins you will need a database, to store account info etc..

If you dont know PHP/MYSQL you will need someone to do this for you , or you'll need to get a tutorial.

If you just want a login area to protect parts of the site.. then use Bravenet.com, they have lots of free website tools, as well as premium services.

PS. Lee's suggestion is good for the design, but please keep in mind that images on the cafemom website and possibly the design will have copyrights attached... You may potentially be opening yourself up for a lawsuit if you keep/use any of the images.

Reply:When you are on the web site www.cafemom.com , save the files to a directory for each page you look at. Save the graphics in the same place.

You need a webpage program for doing web pages. Load each .html file one by one and edit to suit your needs and taste, then save them. Once you have everything done, then you can upload it to a free web hosting site.

Reply:The best way i can think of is to get a server that you can put your own program on, that way you can have login names/passwords, a place for them to upload their pics, and then a place for them to put there stories on the and then they could edit them to. there is a way to set up a site but my understanding you would have to have them email you there pics and then you would have to put them up your self, and by having your own server program they can do it themselves, but you would need to hire someone to make the program for you unless you know how to do it yourself.

Help with uploading a web page please?

i'm a complete novice. i have a hosting package and have written a basic homepage with html in notepad. i uploaded it into a folder called public_html on my ftp address that i was provided with. this worked fine but now i want to update it. i've repeated the process, deleted my orignal upload from the publi folder and placed my new html folder in but nothing has changed on my site. how do i update it please.

If you are using an programming and uploading the file to the public_html, you shouldn't have any problems. I would check to make sure the file(s) have the exact name and extention (.html) it should (index.html for the main page) or that you are dropping it in to the right place (the main file).

Try refreshing the page in your browser also. What do you "see" online when you go to the page you've uploaded?

It sounds like you've performed all the right steps. Go to your browser, hold down Control and Shift, and while doing so click reload/refresh.

If that doesn't resolve the problem, did you have to do anything after your initial FTP to make the page display? You may have to repeat it every time you upload.
Reply:make sure that you've manually refreshed your browser. you could still have to old page cached locally in your browser. go the the your page's URL and then manually refresh with F5 or the refresh button. that should help.

In many cases your Internet Service Provider will offer a small amount of free hosting, but that鈥檚 usually sufficient for getting started. If you discover that you need more than what they provide both Yahoo and Godaddy.com offer hosting packages along with a domain name registration service.

As for designing the site, you didn't mention if you knew HTML or if you had a web page editor, but many web hosts offer easy to use tools for setting up your first site. You鈥檒l soon outgrow them, though, and want something better so I would suggest learning HTML and try picking up the free Matrix Y2K to use as an HTML editor. You can find it here:

Reply:I agree with bob, one of the other users that has answered your question. I've been using http://www.startlogic.com as my web host. Last time I checked, they had a promotion where you can get 2 years hosting for $50. This includes upto 5 databases, open source software (WordPress blog, PHP-BB, ecommerce etc.). You can access all these features via the easy to use vdeck control panel.

I'm sure many other hosts provide pretty much the same features, but this is the only one I have experience with.

If you are serious about websites either for personal or your business, don't go to free web hosting as they are usually not reliable and you may end up losing all your hard work. Free web hosts usually put advertisements on your websites and it could be annoying.

If you like to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website, I got more than 100 websites in about 6 months' time), go for multiple web hosting services where you could host all your websites in one account.

How do you do web pages?
there are many free web host that have WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors that come with your site. tripod and angelfire are two that come to mind, just off the top of my head. Tripod comes with pop ups though, and angelfire has banner ads.

It depends a lot on if you just want a web page, or if you want a complete multipage website, what you want it for, and how technical and snazzy you want to get.

You could always download a trial version of Macromedia Dreamweaver to build you web page/site. It is a lot like using MS Word or the likes, when in design mode. There are several places online that you can download website templates and edit them in Dreamweaver.

Then upload to your web host. just make sure you change the links to the site domain. Unless, you take advantage of the ftp feature in Dreamweaver.

Hope that helps some, though I imagine you most likely find it all confusing if you are just starting web-design. I did when I started. I would say the best advice is just get a good HTML reference (you might find some online, just google, or search yahoo) and jump on in.

You might try checking into www.pureportals.com. they even have a shopping cart interface for your site. or you could maybe look into setting up a paypal account.

As for selecting an actual hosting provider...

You should really spend some time making this decision. Don't just go with the first one you see. Bug them a bit, see how friendly they are before picking one.

Most important of all is getting a separate registrar for your domain name. I use 1and1 for the domain name but I use another provider for the actual host. This way, if I should ever decide to move hosting providers, I can change the settings with 1and1.com and keep my domain name. For the actual web host, I use a VPS. (probably more than you'd need for a small business)

Once you establish your domain name, you don't want to loose it if something goes wrong. Keeping the registrar and hosting provider as two different companies will go a long way toward shielding you from damages.

When picking a hosting provider, you actually want a small one, you'll get friendly service that way. Larger hosts can be reluctant to help you when you get into problems. Since you kept your registrar with a separate company, you get to keep your domain name if this small company goes belly-up for any reason. Friendly service w/out the risks!

They have many options for small businesses and they have a free basic option. You can get ideas from their templates and go ahead design around that.

After that you just have to upload to your hosting company, and point your domain name to the hosting company's ip address and path.

Everytime I want to buy a specific domain it is inevitably owned by someone else. The trouble is, when I look at their site I am usually met with a generic hosting park page that holds no content. to get new posts by email, you need to use autoresponder. You can use a free one at freefollowup.com and to set up anonymous comment, just go to your blogger settings. I think it's somewhere on the comments section.

Visual web developer express is a tool used to create code of a web application like the user interface. This is something you usually develop on your own machine and then deploy on your server. You don't install it on your server.

SQL express is a database system for storing information that your database application would use. This is the one you can put on your server and use to power your web applications.

So develop the application with web developer on your personal computer, install SQL express on your dedicated server, and when you are done then you can deploy your web application project on your web server to interact with SQL express.

You will have to consult your Dotnetnuke documentation to make sure it will work with IIS 6 and SQL express editions (I don't see an immediate problem but you never know).

Instead we give flat rates. We try our best to be the most affordable and still support our selves paying bills LOL.

Some observations

1) "Home Sitemap Contact" at the top are not working....

2) The forms that come after clicking on "Contact US" and "Feed back" should not allow empty fields to be accepted... its allowing blank information to be sent right now.

3) After clicking "Testimonials" the loaded page has no gap/space between the text and the picture.

4) The header can be made a narrow... its too large... kills the page... if its narrow then complete information can be viewed without scrolling down.

OK, first. Maintenance Contact. that makes sure that you are getting paid for that extra work. get paid for maintaining client's hosting and domain names. coz everytime the clients email goes down, or the hosting goes down (which would be hardly) they will hassle you. having said that, dont overdo it. because you still want to maintain that relationship with them.

Now, your rates. dont keep it low, or else you become cheap. dont be too high coz then you wont get them. keep it high enough, showing you are doing quality work for quality price. i have a motto, you can only get two of these three: quality, price, time. prices: one pager exclusively designed $120, but give a discount for 10/20 page site. coz all the pages will obviously be templated. flash is expensive. one pager - $150 - $200. ecommerce on the other hand, you make your own rule there. i go by programming time. if i am customizing a shopping cart, then i would charge my HTML design rate per page.

Portfolio: create a flash portfolio, online and a cd. that way, you can give the cd's to potential clients, but have most details online. give your best shot for the portfolio cd.put in everything you know. it pays off.

I am interested in setting up a website which would allow people to rate their prior bosses and managers on a variety of standard managment criteria. I would also like to solicit comments to round out the feedback. The intent would be to highlight the excellent managers, and allow the many individual contributors to have a voice in providing feedback on the bad managers who seem to have an uncanny ability to 'fail upward'.

I am interested in finding out how and where I should incorporate to best protect myself from any personal liability that might result from such a venture. (Including offshore LLC's that my do a better job of providing a shield from litigation).

Secondly, I am interested in finding out whether there are certain hosting locations that might provide a more advantageous legal environment for such a venture.

i would strongly advise against hosting on your machine unless you have some good protection against DNS/DOS attacks

if you really want to host i would do some resarch on apache server, this will host the site on your machine and then u get a domain and register but without hosting and that will have a re-direct to your external ip address.. but you need to have a static ip address from your isp, or u would need to keep changing it with the domain.

Make sure your folder structure is the same on your home computer as on your web host. In other words, if your images are in a folder called "images", create a folder called "images" on godaddy.com and upload your image files there.

when a small business hires someone to create a website for their business, does the business normaly also hire the person to manage it monthly as far as adding content and paying the monthly hosting. have no idea that once the site was made the developer just hands over the domain passwords and says "all done and pay this place every month". never was really sure how they worked that out.

If it makes any difference, i am just talking about a small local business that doesnt require much change in content on a monthly basis. maybe little but some.

If it does not require much change you can ask the web developer to provide you an interface (something simmilar to blogger.com) so that you can update your website yourself.

The nice thing about web development as a career/industry, is it is extremely flexible.

When my company performs design and development services we work with the client to do what is best for them.

For clients who have little to no technical proficiency, I often find or provide hosting, design, development, and content updates.

For more tech saavy clients, I provide design and development and offer to host and update content.

Sometimes there's a middle ground where we do not host, but build (or implement) a content management system for the client, so they can easily make updates to the code without needing to know XHTML, CSS, or other programming.

It always depends on the clients needs, at least in my book, and any developer worth their salt should be able build or implement a content management system and give you control of your content, just expect to pay for it.

Also, I highly recommend keeping your domain names and hosting accounts in your name or your business' name. I've had clients in the past trust the wrong people, and we've had to go to court to get their domains/websites back.

I am a designer and I have been asked to put together an updateable slideshow in flash. I am interested in some software called "Slideshow Pro Director" which seems to be an easy way to do this. I was having a look through the documentation for this software and it says you need to have a mysql database set up on the server in order to do it. Is this something that I need to do, or would my web host take care of the mysql database?

You'll need a Web host that provides MySQL databases as part of its hosting packages. Almost all do at no added cost. Make sure the version of MySQL they have meets the version your software requires.

All photo gallery software of this sort is technically complicated. However, if it's made well, you should be able to control it completely from its administrative interface; you shouldn't have to mess witn the nuts and bolts of it.

I am no longer able to add or update pages on my website as I am unable to save them in my WYSIWYG program on my hard drive. I have plently of hard drive space and adequate memory but the file is too large to work with and I am unable to split the pages into different files to save and upload separately to my web host without messing everything up. I would be happy to hear any suggestions? In hindsight I realize I should have started with a different program if I was going to build a larger website, but I am stuck now and I really don't want to have to start from scratch again on this site.

If you open up your website in your browser, view source, and copy the code into your html editor, it will copy it over. Should look the same in WYSIWYG.

Reply:Its a scam, the company name is for a valid company but I'll bet you the contact number is not. If you fill in the info the company will probably write back asking you for a "processing fee" or something like that and saying that after you pay the fee they will send you the prize. How do database servers work?

Hi, I tried to read about databases, but I didn't find it much help. How can a server like Apache(running on your computer) still work when you shutdown? Can other computers still recieve that information when your server/computer is shutdown? Would the database work? Would I need to buy a server dedicated to that? or contact web host that sells server space? is that the better option?

Woah, that is a lot of questions. I guess I'll need to read a whole lot more about databases. I just usually give up because I don't understand how a database can still work if the server is down, especially if the server is running on my computer. Maybe I got it wrong and they just install Apache to test if the database works. Please help!

If you are running the db server you need a dedicated ip for that. So it is better to give that job to a hosting company like www.blazonhosting.com. They do it for low cost.

You can run several servers in one pc(web server, mail server, DB server, file server). But running several servers in one pc leads to slow your pc's perfomences. Then it will slow down the the servers.

How do database servers work?
If the computer is shutdown, none of the services will respond. For something small scale, I would look for a shared webhosting company that offers DB and webspace. Maybe look for one that comes with a control panel like cPanel or Plesk. Those can be very useful, especially if you are still learning.

Depending on the action taken on the website, for instance, browsing categories on an e-commerce website, the system will submit a query to the server which in return will pull out data from the database. This could be a price of a product, description, model number and many other variables.

While dedicated servers are a much better option, they are quite expensive. Shared databases are an affordable solution which works great as well.

If the server that contains the database is down, you will not be able to submit queries and pull out data.

Your going to need an image editing program that has the capability to show you the size of your photos in pixels. Sometimes you get image editing software that comes with a camera or something but a lot of times that is not software that has such a specific capability. You can crop and cut but you don't necessarily know what size your image is once you are done.

A program such as Photoshop will allow you to change your image sizes and will measure in formats of inches, centimeters, milimetres, or pixels depending on what you specify. However, such image editing software is really pricey usually running over $700 for a new program. My advice to you would be to find a friend or someone willing to help you who already has such software and can make the image size changes for you. Otherwise you may be able to contact a print house or graphics designer and maybe they can do it for you for a fee. I really don't know what other solution there may be.

The resizing you want is not equal percentages of width and height, so you will need to go into an image-editor and crop the images to size, deciding yourself which parts of the images to crop off, then build html and/or css to place the images properly

As for members, I'd suggest you let people "sign up": i.e. you enter their data in the database, but you also have a field in the users table where you specify if said members has payed or not.

You set the field to "false" by default, and when the person has payed you change it to true.

So you let all members view the site, that have the payed field set to true.

As for how to do it... you will need to learn some programming, if you don't want to pay anyone. Dunno the prices, sorry :-/ (I don't do freelance stuff).

You're locked in, somewhat, to MS software; you have to put up with the "possibilities" that either (1) they may stop it someday or (2) they may decide to charge for hosting someday - they say the domain name is yours to keep, but if they decide to relinquish registration services, then you'd have to pay someone else to be "registrar. (cheap, $7 per year plus or minus) and (3) it's somewhat constrained in customization - you can't make the web page(s) look as much like your own as you could if you wrote "raw code" and placed it on an "owned" website.

Reply:I'd also recommend Skype. Voice chat and video conferencing are free, but you can also put money on your account to call actual phones from your computer to most anywhere in the world. My brother used it in Japan to call our house phone from his laptop and talk to us at only $.02 a minute! So yeah, Skype works well all the way around.

Why do people do this? Since Windows 95 we have been blessed with the ability to have long file names! Why don't people take advantage of it?

Why do people try to abreviate and use underscores? It is ridiculous!

I do understand that some web hosts do not allow long file names for html files. That should be the only exception!

Some people have to be careful if they have a clusterf**k of equipment all networked together. If they have an old DOS machine running somewhere that is necessary for something (I know - it sounds retarted, but some people are stuck with some pretty screwy setups, and can't afford to upgrade them) then they will have to be careful with their file names since the DOS machine won't be able to recognize them, and will automatically truncate the file names (which can cause serious data loss problems).

The rest of the time it is just people being stupid.

Yeh, when you switch from beginner hosting to premium hosting (like Plesk and Cpanel servers) it can be a bit confusing and overwhelming at first. I know the feeling but now I love it. If your host offers good support like mine does (support tickets, searchable knowledgebase and forums) then you should do fine. Your scripts *should* contain read-me files if not however then you may need to manually edit a few details of some php scripts to corrispond to your own website's location and data etc in dreamweaver source view you will see the scripts exact contain. But in future I'd suggest using www.hotscripts.com for free scripts with better support.

you do not need Dreamweaver, but you do need a webserver with Apache, IIS or Xitami or any other PHP aware server. you will ofcourse need to install PHP on the server and set it up. Once you have all that, you just need to create a virtual folder and put your scripts in that folder. then access your scripts using a path similar to: http://localhost/your_php_script.php.

Sorry, but it's not.

I highly recommend that you look into working with PHP

before you try to purchase PHP scripts. Your best bet

ritenow is to get your own webspace. They are most

likely equipped with Apache, and have PHP already

installed aswell. All you have to do is upload the PHP

scripts to your website and goto the URL of which the

files are located.

If you don't want to go through all of that then research

Apache. (Installing it Correctly is not as easy as some

people try to tell you.)

In a previous question, I simply asked what scripting language is best for me as I am extremely naive to anything beyond HTML. I got a couple of good answers, including a recommendation to use a CMS. It definitely looks nice.

Basically, I want to create a very simple (yet comprehensive) database for the New Jersey Devils players. It will be an entirely stat-driven site, it doesn't even have to look remotely pretty. I just want people to be able to click around and get stats, sort stats, etc. I can do it in HTML, but that'd take me forever and it will be clunky. I want to be able to enter numbers into a database, call it from the webpage, and move on to the next guy.

In the past 12 hours, I've really picked up the basics of SQL (web host's interface makes it real simple) and how to make basic queries from PHP. I can't believe I am saying this about code, but it is exciting stuff.

Reply:If you only want to display a certain kind of data I would say the best way is to code the stuff yourself using PHP, you won't need a full CMS for just that.

If you want a CMS as well, I would recommend CMSMS. You can design your website however you choose and you can still link in your own PHP scripts, if you want.

DotNetNuke is too slow, Mambo is old and has been pretty well superceded by Joomla. The other great thing is Joomla has some great extensions. I expect one of the forms extensions may give you some of what you need or one of the "anything goes" extensions like Jumi

Well in all honesty servers are mainly the software installed on a computer. Most servers are designed to be servers in that they are a little more powerful and have some redundancy that your home computer doesn't. Many have dual power supplies, dual processors, RAID configured hard drive systems etc.

Dell , HP, IBM, Apple, nearly all manufacturers have servers.

But to learn about them all you need is a computer with server software installed. In fact you can even use XP Pro or 2000 Pro for a server if you want configuration is the key.

I personnaly run Linux it is a great server software package.. reguardless. Try Fedora, or Ubuntu Servers.

Servers work by serving data to clients. Websites don't buy servers so their downloads go faster, they buy servers to serve data! They crash the same as any other computer when then do crash. The best servers run UNIX styled operating systems, such as Solaris and Linux, as they are secure as crash extremely infrequently.

It sounds like you are on a multi-host platform, as a general rule if you pay less than say $100 / month for your presence, you probably are.

If this is the case then your host computer is likely hosting many sites, not just your own site. So as a result when the traffic increases on several sites at once all sites will lag a bit and take longer to load.

4-5 seconds shouldn't be too bad, but if it climbed into the 10-20 I would be up in arms with the provider.

More technical info --

I'm pretty sure you are multi-hosted, I ping'd your URL and then entered the IP into a web-brower address bar http://82.165.132.186 and it came back with error-document not found. If you had a dedicated IP address it should have loaded your site anyway (this is the accepted norm on the internet), hence you more than likely at least have a shared IP address.

This error is usually encountered when you do not have enough memory or one of your memory limits/connection limits needs to be modified. One workaround solution is to edit your etc/my.cnf file to something like what is listed below... THIS IS AN EXAMPLE.

Solving the first problem will probably correct the second problem.

Lastly, always make sure you clean up your connections as a matter of good coding as well as preventing possible memory leaks. You might have just exhausted your connections if you haven't been closing them.

When doing this option, always take your computer book %26amp; any programs you have installed on CD %26amp; they will reinstall %26amp; have it working fast as lightening. Also don't change things when they do this, they return it to how the system is made to operate.

1) Why would the email address of the sender be "mrs.florasmith53@hotmail.co.uk"

2) Micrsoft and aol .... you think their PR department would release something that spelled their own name wrong?

3) Microsoft and AOL are NOT the largest Internet companies. Microsoft is a software maker and AOL is an Internet Service Provider. The real companies would not make such a blatant mistake.

4) Why would they ask you to send your information to the domain @katamail.com?

5) The email is signed "Mrs. Bryan McDonald"... hello? Who in the corporate world refer to themselves as "Mrs. so-and-so" using the husband's name?

I was looking through my web hosts directory when i came across this website: www.technologyorhealth.com. It must be fairly new as it isn't on any search engines yet but I imagine, will be eventually. My question is if anyone else has discovered what incredible information and knowledge this site has on health risks relating to the latest gadgets and other differing products. I would love to know what other opinions on this site as i personally found it very interesting, especially the members area (you have to pay and annoyingly create a paypal account first, but when I got onto the members area, I found out even more and the articles written were incredible).

You can't do it on freewebs. It's simply not possible. You would need a server which supports server-side scripting. If you don't know what this is, then you are better off hiring a web developer, or downloading and installing free CMS systems, and installing them on said server.

I recommend a PHP %26amp; MySQL based system. I find ASP systems to be insecure, unreliable, and slow.

Hello. Back in the day I posted some things on some forums on a couple websites. Some people found it offensive. Due to my inexperience they got my real name. Then they made a website where they list my name, insults aimed at me, and a bunch of untrue information. The problem is that if someone who looked up my name found it might think its true.

The webmaster refuses to do anything. If I contact the web host that provides the service to the webmaster. can they legally do anything?

I can find it with no problem. It might be worth centring the images on the page though, but otherwise it looks good - well done. Gallery is spelt with a 'y' at the end, however, not 'ie' :)

The only suggestion I can make is that your system is using a cached version from before the site was up. Go to the site, and then press CTRL %26amp; F5 together, and that should re-download the index page from the server.

On the page you're creating: type the text for your hyperlink.

Highlight the text, right-click, and choose "create hyperlink" from the pop-up menu. (If you get a spell-check type menu, tell it "Ignore All" and try again.)

From there you should be able to browse through your Web files to the file you want to link to, without having to type in the whole path to the file.

I just started writing a review of a free web hosting site that I found a few days ago... it will let you install the blogging software of your choice. They have auto-installers for WordPress and Mambo (I'm running Mambo on a test site there right now)... Drupal worked with some kinks (no friendly URLs), and so far I haven't gotten the latest Joomla version to work (some problems with automated FTP access). Other than those few kinds, it's an excellent value because not only is it MONEY-free, it's ADVERTISEMENT-free too.

You shouldn't open unsolicted email from unknown sources. Often what happens is that when you open up spam, it sends back a trigger to the originating source indicating that a valid email address has been found thus subjecting you to even more spam down the road. MySQL Error?

My web host keeps getting shut down on a VPS server. I've got 256 MB of RAM on the server. All I've got are Wordpress blogs and I've disabled anything that looks like a troublemaker. I've tried optimizing my database, I've tried enabling the CACHE. Does anyone have an idea of how I can get my MySQL database to stop crashing my server.

Back to Adams, post. It seems you have some sort of strange error, to properly debug this issue you have to look at the logs of what is happening. First thing to do is to check the MySQL Server Logs:

First check if you see anything strange in those logs, before you try to check them, delete all the logs at first, and restart your MySQL server and see if it crashes again, once it crashes save the log files and read them.

If your running Windows or Linux, read the logs as well, it might be a Operating system fault.

You might have found a bug in MySQL and MySQL team loves bugs :)

I believe there is a conflict between software or the way you set it up.

You could always try to remove and reinstall the server to check if that works, if not, read the logs and inform MySQL developement team via Form or IRC ( irc.freenode.net #mysql )

If you're using InnoDB as a storage engine: switch to MyISAM and wait for MySQL 6 which will contain a full replacement for InnoDB. Even if you don't use InnoDB, disable it anyway. On some machines InnoDB is just troublemaker.

Installing Contribute on the clients PC will allow them to connect to there site via ftp (you can limit the folders/files they can edit) and then they can simply edit and upload at the click of a button. It's a very friendly program with a WYSIWYG editor.

Alternatively, you can use PHP and make your own online editor to let them edit their site.

We have three different websites. All of them have their main domain name and then multiple other domain names that also point to them. Each page in a web site can have meta tags and copy that make it easy for the search engine BOT to find the site.

What will matter is the reliability of the web hosting company. If all your sites are hosted on one server and that server has a problem, all your sites may be vulnerable.

If you want a free domain name, that isn't going to happen if you have a $0 dollar budget. All freeservers would have about the same limitations and a subdomain.

However, you can get a nice domain name and a small hosting package for less than 50 dollars a year. I'm a poor college student as well, and I make do with the 35 dollars a year that I am spending for my .org domain name and small hosting package.

It honestly sounds to me that something like blogger (i.e. a blog/journal site) would suit your needs. But if you do buy a domain name and a hosting package, you can easily set up a blog system on your own like wordpress.

Again, I'm not sure if you want your own com/org/net/etc. name without paying for anything, but if that is your goal, that isn't going to happen.

I have to following code but am unsure how to execute it:

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'testuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'testpass' WITH GRANT OPTION

When I run this through phpmyadmin I get:

Access denied for user 'craig'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

'craig' is not a mySQL user account, it is my web host login

Is that why I get the error?

That is because your webhost company does not allow you to Add a new user since your current user 'craig' does not have enough priveleges.

Basically, many shared webhosting companies are like that. They usually have a web admin panel such as CPanel or anything similar, that you add MySQL users there! Then you can login using that.

So lets repeat:

I assume you havn't created a Database User yet using your webhosting service. (go on their administration page, and check MySQL section and create user from there)

That is not the reason why your getting that error. You already logged in PHPMyAdmin :) so you do have a MySQL user which is active. I assume.

So technically speaking, you have to use their tool to create users, and that current user that your using has no permission to create a new user.

Howzit!!!

CPanel is your Control Panel and your web hosting company should have supplied you with one. If you do not remember anything, call (or email) them and ask them for the user name and the password (in your case- also how to access you cpanel).

I access my CPanel from my hosting company's website :) CPanel username is usually your domain name and uses a different password from the FTP.

Please make sure you trust the guys who requested your details.. you should never just give some strangers such details so that they can handler your business unless you trust them...

Also I wouldn't give out your main FTP details if I were you. Instead log into your Cpanel once you find it :) and add another FTP user and only give them access to the folder they need, once your script is installed delete that user.

I've got a web host that uses the cpanel control panel (http://cpanel.net/index.html) on a unix platform.

The error log is set up to report the most recent 300 errors, but many of the errors I get have to do with IP addresses I've blocked from my system (spam bots). I'd like to ignore these errors and only track those that are useful to me.

Is it possible to configure what errors get reported by cpanel?
